Who we are

Welcome to the Welsh Vineyards Association
The Welsh Vineyards Association is one of seven regional associations spanning the wine growing areas of England and Wales and forms part of the ‘Wines of Great Britain Limited’. Wales – being the newest region to WineGB – was created in 2013 and provides support and advice for winemakers, vineyards and viticulturists throughout the country.

Wales can boast that the first commercial vineyard in the UK was planted by Lord Bute at Castell Coch in 1870s. Our vineyards now, are sited from Chepstow in the south to Conwy in the north, Monmouth in the east and Aberaeron in the west. Present production is around 100,000 bottles per year and this is set to grow to around 200,000 by 2025, driven by vineyard expansion and new plantings.

The quality wines produced by the Welsh vineyards have won many awards in competitions that range from Welsh Wine of the Year through to international competitions such as Decanter and International Wine Challenge. Many of the vineyards also see tourism as a key part of their business and welcome visitors to their facilities.

Welsh Vineyard Association has received support from Welsh government in several ways. As it started its journey, support was received from the Food & Drink Division – this enabled the creation of a Wine Trail for Wales and involved a website www.winetrailwales.co.uk, social media and a leaflet that each member could hand out at their cellar door etc. Farming Connect then started supporting the vineyards in 2017 with valuable knowledge transfer sessions. These involved industry experts sharing their experiences and business skills with members of the Association and some of those learning sessions have also been posted on the Farming Connect website and are accessible to all.

2018 saw Welsh wine raise its profile to a higher level again with support from the Food & Drink Wales Drinks Cluster. Six Welsh vineyards showcased their wines at the two biggest wine trade and press events held in the UK – The Royal Welsh Spring Fair and the main summer event, The Royal Welsh Show.

The future is looking “Rosé” for the Welsh Vineyard Association as it grows. Having covered a lot of ground in the first five years, it is an exciting time to become involved.

This website is the perfect starting point for those who are looking to visit a Welsh vineyard where you can meet the women and men who throw their hearts, heads and souls into their work all year round.

Montgomery Vineyard

POWYS

Montgomery Vineyard is in Montgomery, in the heart of Mid Wales. The south facing vineyard occupies a five acre site, with over three acres under vine with Solaris, Rondo, Seyval blanc Pinot Noir Precoce and Bacchus varieties. The terroir is made up of flinty, glacial deposits and is the key to our success. The vineyard is a naturally sheltered amphitheatre created by the contours of the hillside.

We produce a range of whites, rosé, red and sparkling white and rose wines and we have received numerous awards both locally and internationally. Matthew Jukes, wine critic for the Daily Mail says of our Solaris 2019: “Montgomery makes my favourite Welsh version of this grape and the fruit is floral and mildly tropical on the nose and smooth and soothing on the palette. In the top 50 most influential wines in the UK.”

Parva Farm Vineyard

TINTERN, NR. CHEPSTOW

Planted in 1979 with a mixture of 16 varieties of grapes, Parva Farm Vineyard is one of the oldest commercial vineyards in Wales. It is on a south facing slope overlooking the village of Tintern with its famous historic Abbey. This is probably the site used by the monks from the Abbey for their vineyard and it is possible that the Romans before them cultivated vines on this Welsh hillside.

Visitors, leaving the crowds behind, may stroll among the vines and admire the beautiful views of the Wye Valley. On returning to the vineyard shop, they can relax and enjoy a taste of our award – winning wines. Our main grape varieties are Bacchus, Seyval Blanc, Muller Thurgau, Pinot Noir and Regent and we produce still white, rose and red wines and sparkling white and rose as well as some fruit wines and Welsh mead. These may be purchased in our shop along with locally produced ales, cider & perry, gifts and plants.

Red Wharf Bay Vineyard

ANGLESEY

Red Wharf Bay Vineyard is wonderfully situated overlooking the bay from which it takes its name, in the Traeth Coch Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Isle of Anglesey. I first planted vines in our field here in 2010. I totally mismanaged them, eventually producing a very small amount of unremarkable wine. Then I thought “Wouldn’t it be so much easier to grow grapes somewhere with a bit more sun?” So I had the idea of planting my vineyard in Andalucía, in southern Spain.

Thwarted by the Common Agricultural Policy, I came back to Anglesey and learnt how to work in this delightful, infuriating profession properly - but I brought some of Spain back with me! This is the result - a Welsh vineyard with a distinctly Spanish ethos. Come visit and hear the story (but booking is essential, we only open by appointment). One of BBC Countryfile’s 10 Best Places to Visit on Anglesey.

The first vines, which were planted in May 2021, are a mix of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, and the trellising is being erected at present. It is planned to complete planting in 2022. Since moving to the 6 acre smallholding, Peter and Liz Loch have planted a wildflower meadow and an orchard containing more than 70 apple, pear, plum and cherry trees.

12 ST HILARY

Sticle Vineyard/Winery is a 34 acre Organic and biodynamic Eco-Wine Estate property of which 25 acres is dedicated for its vineyard. Nestled 800ft above sea level in the undulating Welsh Landscape, this family-owned vineyard was established in 2019 with 10,000 sparkling vines of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Its first harvest is scheduled for 2023.

Our three Vintage Prestige cuvée will be produced using Traditional Method from solely 1stpress. Once blended, the 2ndmaturation on less in the bottle will be on its journey to the aging cave away from noise and light for a period of no less than 15 months and some of that Vintage will continue its journey for a period of 10 years until both achieve their ultimate flavours, colour and distinctive pearly bubbles of pink, gold and grey. Although the same care will be attributed to each Vintage, the aging process is the ingredient of time that defines the ultimate characteristics for each. Les Trois Perles Collection, a Rosé, a Blanc de Blancs, and a Blanc de Noirs, will reflect a unique moment in time to cherish and share!

The Dell Vineyard

RAGLAN

The Dell Vineyard is located near the village of Raglan, Monmouthshire. A south facing vineyard nestled in the rolling hills above the Usk and Wye valleys, in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Planted in 2002, the established vineyard was eventually abandoned for a few years before being lovingly restored to its former glory in 2017. Dan and Lucy Alford were looking for something new after working through the covid pandemic, and in early 2021 took on the 1 acre site of 1600 vines as a starting point for their viticulture adventure. Plans are afoot to plant a further 5 acres of vines next year on the family farm located a few miles away. They aren’t open to visitors yet, but have big plans so stay tuned!
